Let me assume that you now know everything about the advantages and disadvantages of various methods of taking a Spanish home study course or learning Spanish online. Naturally, you may feel overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information you have received. You might even wonder if it is really necessary to learn Spanish. However, a sound working knowledge of Spanish is a must, considering the fact that there are at least 43 countries with a substantial number of Spanish Native speakers. Also, Spanish is the 4th most spoken language in the world, behind, Mandarin, Hindi, and English with more than 340 million native Spanish speakers (English and Spanish are almost equal).

Imagine that you are a salesperson in a prominent store. A customer approaches you with a particular product and asks you a question in Spanish. If you don not know how to speak Spanish, you will have difficulty closing the sale. You might know everything about the product, but if you can not understand the customer's question, you won't be able to answer it. The customer might have asked you about the safety of the product or about its availability in different sizes and colors. As a salesperson, you need to learn Spanish in order to converse effectively with your Spanish-speaking customers, whether they are local or tourists who are coming to your country.

Here is another scenario. A lovely girl approaches you and says, "Me llamo Maria. Como te llamas" What did she say? Would not it be nice to know? Ok, here is the answer. She said, "My name is Maria. What is your name?" In response, you ought to say, "Me llamo (name)". If this had been a real situation, could you have responded on your own? If not, that would have been a lost opportunity to make a new friend.

A child rushes up to you, tears streaming down her cheeks, and speaks rapidly in Spanish. Since have not bit the bullet to learn Spanish, you won't be able to understand her. She might be in serious trouble, or she might have gotten lost or can not find her parents. If you had only started learning conversational Spanish, you might have been able to help her.

Before visiting a Spanish speaking country for tropical vacation, business trip, exchange program, or mission trip, it would help if you learned some conversational Spanish. Of course, people do speak English even in Spanish-speaking countries, but they are more comfortable conversing in their primary language, Spanish, after all, you are in their country. You will be doing yourself and them a great favor if you learn at least some conversational Spanish. Otherwise, you might see plenty of Spanish speakers trying to help you, give you directions, or just offer some advice like "No vaya alla, no es seguro." Would you understand what they are saying to you? It means "Don't go there, it is not safe"! You would not want this to happen, would you?

Maybe you can identify with one of these situations and how it would be helpful for you to learn conversational Spanish, or you can come up with other situations. The important thing is the world is getting smaller every day, and the number of Spanish speakers is growing both in percentage and absolute number of native speakers.
