In towns across Colonial, spring house tours--and particularly kitchen tours--sprout up like crocuses on the awesome May Morning. Synced as much as perfectly align with A Birthday, they offer women the distinct voyeuristic pleasure of peeking within the lives of individuals who might otherwise hide behind barriers--physical or economic--excessive to otherwise scale.
Such was the situation earlier this week while in my very own small town seven homes were opened up for the annual kitchen tour. This Friday I'll also go to a Designer Showhouse having a girlfriend others we dot the days ahead. However, you can only look into a lot of lives. Out of the box usually my observation in the finish during the day: we've become proficient fluffers and feathers in our nests. Refer to it as the cocooning movement, refer to it as a thrust home-based entertaining...or refer to it as the need for conspicuous consumption: Palm Beach Kitchen Renovation and decorating our homes like there's no tomorrow!
I am unable to criticize the efforts of those best-intentioned homeowners. For I'm formally within their ranks. Formerly in an extensive renovation from the third floor in our house, we've also done less glamorous projects. We have ripped up carpeting to put lower hardwood. Removed wallpaper to colour ceilings to floors. Replaced lights. Added bamboo shades and silk panels. So we are about to go into the kitchen destruction phase. The builder is arranged. Plans attracted. Master carpenter commissioned. Appliances configured.
I completely understand the angst.
Approximately the eighties and the beginning of the brand new millennium, we with each other (like a nation) decided that the completely remodelled, the bells-and-whistle-loaded kitchen will be the benchmark for any good house. That whether we cooked or otherwise, we wanted industrial-strength appliances. That people needed six burners, even when us was small or our nest was getting emptier and quieter. That people needed stainless, no matter its penchant for attracting small fingerprints. That cabinet needed to be perfectly configured. Drawers needed to glide quietly.
I spent a large amount of time sorting all this out. Looking to get our heads--and our chequebook--wrapped round the scope from the project. To determine that which was really necessary and just what was purely frivolous. In performing my research, I happened across a fascinating little statistic that claims that many people perform a kitchen renovation must know due to--drum roll please--pressure from peers! That it is not only to obtain a house up to date or re-purchase or appearance or because we may want to enhance the odds that we'll really prepare inside it. We would like renovated kitchens because our friend made it happen. Or our neighbour. Geez.
Odds are, you're either in the middle of a renovation yourself, you've just finished one, or you're going to go lower the road towards one. So be on the lookout for an additional trend:
Glass-fronted refrigerators. Martha Stewart just put one out of her New You can house. They'll easily be the trend inside a year. I needed one--actually, it had been the main one factor I requested within my own renovation--but I am not receiving it. Could not get anybody within my family in the future aboard beside me. Could not get anybody looking forward to ensuring that stays are searching how they do within the magazine ads on their behalf. But stay tuned in. They are likely to be big.
Stone countertops that aren't granite. Granite has been utilized. A great deal. We are now seeing the stone that isn't within the ubiquitous category. Search for more limestone and marble. And a few excellent stone look-alikes.
Steamer ovens. OK. I believe this can be a guy factor. I attempted to convince my hubby that the old-fashioned pot works all right when heated over a wide-open flame, but he believes that we'll eat more steamed broccoli when we purchase a unit created for exactly that. (And steamed fish, chicken and cauliflower, too.) Whatever. They are an excellent size for any wall or island installation and therefore are selling like hotcakes.
Warming drawers. It appears like I am within the minority here by not receiving one. But something's gotta give. Can't have all the features. They perform congrats of keeping things warm until everybody will get home from soccer and piano training.
Fabulous hardware. Search for wonderful knobs, drawer pulls and hinges. Obtainable in a lot of styles and finishes, these can impact character for your cabinetry and add some visual punch the room deserves.
Lights occupy space. Search for wrought iron in black and bronze finishes. Saw a lot of interesting ones at the market. All cost points, styles and shapes. Lighting has truly taken a location of prominence within the overall room design and budget.
Kitchens reign supreme because of the official stamp of the house. They mark the personality of the homeowners. Of the tastes as well as their stage in existence. Those are the first room that would-be house buyers make their first beeline and the real thing maker--or breaker--of the house. While you awaken your senses and stick to the call of spring (and you may feel it, can't you?), open your vision and minds towards the endless options, creative stirrings and nurturing possibilities within this most significant room. They do not refer to it as the centre of the house for nothin'.
