Summer is coming! For older teens and college students who need a great summer job, there is no better position than that of a lifeguard. Sitting on the beach or at poolside is how many people would love to spend their summer vacation; lifeguards get to do that! Of course it isn't all fun and games. Here are some reasons you should get your lifeguard certification in South Florida.
What Would You Rather Do
If your parents are nagging you to get a job or you need some extra spending money, would you rather flip burgers for minimum wage or spend time in a deck chair on a beach and get paid more than minimum wage? Even if you're beyond the age of school at any level, you might still think about becoming a lifeguard. Lifeguards are always in demand, especially in places like Florida, because pool safety regulations demand that businesses with pools have lifeguards. In many places of the country a shortage of certified lifeguards has driven wages up to a surprising level.
Excitement and Skills
Lifeguarding is a serious business. In spite of TV shows, movies, and stereotypes that might depict the job as fun and fancy free, lifeguards learn skills to save lives. That means, first and foremost preventing emergencies through the enacting and enforcing of rules. There's a reason why there shouldn't be any running on the pool deck. As the police officer of the pool, the lifeguard needs to know when to whistle and warn, or gently remind, people of the rules that they are breaking. Most of the time people will slow down at the whistle and follow the rules.
Lifeguards are also trained in recognizing real emergencies. You've been at the pool when people are trying to drown each other or someone is splashing around and shouting "Help!" to get attention. A lifeguard has to learn the difference between these acts and a true drowning victim, who is generally very quiet.
Perhaps the best skill that comes with lifeguard certification in South Florida are those that will help you save a life. Lifeguards get the highest training available to non-medical people in CPR and first aid. These skills don't just come in handy on the job, but they also work beyond the pool. In short, getting your lifeguarding qualifications can be a life-changing experience for you and those you supervise at the pool or on the beach.
