Car battery is the power source of your vehicle. Your music accessories, power window and other electronic car accessories are powered by your car battery. If the power source is not taken care of properly, it may land you in serious troubles. The life span of a car battery largely depends on the weather conditions. Within 24 hours of driving in hot weather, a car battery will begin to discharge. That’s why it has an average life of 2 and a half years in hotter regions and almost 4 years in colder regions. However, on average car batteries last between 2-4 years, but with few tips and tricks you can increase its life up to 3-5 years.

- Frequent short rides prevent your car battery from fully charging. Avoid short driving and maintain your car battery power by driving it on longer routes for longer period of time. You can also buy a portable car battery quick charger. It will help you jump starting your car battery without another vehicle in case you’re ever stranded.

- Make sure to turn off all electronic appliances when not in use. Accidentally, keeping your headlights, dippers and other electronic devices can put a heavy toll on your vehicle’s battery. Double check your car accessories while leaving your vehicle.

- Ensure that the car battery is tightly fastened. A loose car battery will vibrate that would potentially damage the internal structure and other parts of the battery as well as car.

- Clean the battery after every month. Use cotton cloth to clean up the surface and body of the car battery. Make sure the car battery terminals are corrosion and rust free. A corroded or rusty battery terminal will restrict the flow of current and lowers the performance of the battery. Use hot water+baking soda to clean up the terminals. Petroleum jelly on the car battery terminals will help avoiding corrosion and rust.

- Test your battery output current and voltage time to time. Tracking its performance will tell you how well you are maintaining it and if you are due for a new one.
