It was a Bollywood movie starring Akshay Kumar through which we came to know the names “The Undertaker” and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Since then, WWE is expanding its reach from urban to rural areas across the country. Recently, when the Modern Day Maharaja “Jinder Mahal” won the WWE Heavyweight Championship, Indian fans were gone crazy. WWE too decided to add some more celebrations and scheduled a tour to India. Superstars such as Triple H, Alexa Bliss, Jinder Mahal and Sasha Banks to name a few competed in front of packed Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the nation's capital and the fans were mesmerized by what they saw.
Professional wrestling has had a long-standing connection with India. Back in 1996, World Wrestling Federation (WWF) organized their first show in the country and it was an instant hit. The crowd was captivated with the performance of Bret Hart and Co with 30,000 people turning up for that event. However, a lot has changed since then but one thing that has remained the same is WWE's popularity in India. From TV ratings to fan support, WWE has always enjoyed a good following in the country. The recent WWE tour to India exactly describes it's priority to Indian market.
The fun-filled evening of the show kicked-off with Finn Balor winning the first match of the event with a 'coup de grace'. 'Desi Boys' Jeet Rama and Kishan Raftar squared off against the Miztourage in the next match. In women wrestling, Alexa Bliss took on Sasha Banks. While the packed audience kept cheering for “The Boss”, much to their dismay it was Bliss who won with a pinfall. However Sasha Banks received a huge ovation after the match. The Shield also made their way into the arena when they faced The Bar and Samoa Joe. The trio won with ease and the crowd started cheering for Roman Reigns and the team. However, everyone was on their feet when The Modern Day Maharaja came out to compete against Triple H. The latter received a huge appreciation and standing ovation as he arrived in the stadium. The two men took each other to their limits as it was difficult to predict the result. Triple H won the game but the Modern Day Maharaja gave a tough competition though. Post match, Triple H thanked the Indian fans and said it's an honor to come to India.
