A car battery is an important part of your car, that's why proper check up and maintenance is mandatory. In recent years we see more and more cars that have a battery that will crank the vehicle but will cause other problems because of its poor condition. Car batteries can lose their charge for a variety of reasons, and there's always a chance that whatever went wrong might go wrong again. However when your car battery keeps draining over and over again, it's a pretty safe bet that there's an underlying problem that needs to be dealt with before you end up stranded somewhere. Here are some common problems that can cause a battery to drain slowly
If your ignition is turned off but the electrical devices such as radio presets, GPS, security alarms/clocks continue to run, it can drain your battery. This type of drain is known as parasitic drain. Below 75 milliamps parasitic drains are normal but any number greater than 75 will drain the battery quickly. The most common causes are trunk lights, hod lights or glove box.
Bad Charging System
A faulty charging system will drain the battery while the car is running. When an alternator is not pushing out enough voltage, which should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, the battery will drain quickly.
Bad Alternator Diodes
A diode allows current to flow in one direction only and if it gets damaged the current could leak in opposite direction that cause battery drain.
Batteries that are old or have been drained continuously may not hold a full charge anymore. Ideally, you should replace your car battery every four or five years. However, some batteries can last longer if taken care properly.
Tips for Car Battery maintenance
Always charge the car battery with caps in space. Fill the battery with only distilled water; tap water or rain water causes harm to it's life. Switch off the electronic devices when not in use. Do not keep inflammable gas or liquid near the battery. Check the alternator diode and the charging system if working properly or not. Pay attention to parasitic drains as they are hard to find, check trunk lights, hod lights, glove box etc. A lot of new cars are available with proximity keys. They are a great convenience, all you need to do is walk up to the locked door with the key in your pocket and it opens up automatically. The proximity keys work on radio signals that too uses battery power. So make sure to use it smartly and when not require disconnect/switch off the proximity keys to save battery.
