Imagine you are out with your family, driving the car and going and spending valuable time with your beloved ones. You parked your car, enjoyed the picnic and when you get back in your vehicle it just refuses to start, flashing a low battery sign on the dashboard. You are surprised and thinking, “How could it be possible, I just purchased it a week before?” Well, you are not alone; a number of people are going through this type of situation. The car battery is an integral part of your vehicle. It is the soul that powers your car and if it doesn’t work properly, you will be in trouble. There are some tips that will help you zero down on the most appropriate battery for your wheels so that your crazy night out and family trips goes on to memorable.

To choose the right battery for your car, you need to know the basic nomenclature for batteries. The basic parameters are Ampere-Hour (Ah) rating, Cranking amps (CA), Cold Cranking amps (CCA), and Reserve Capacity (RC). The voltage for which the electrical systems for cars are designed is standardized to 12 Volts. Cranking amp rating denotes the peak current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°C. Ampere-hour rating denotes how long the battery be able to provide current of particular amperage. Higher Ah will result in more powerful battery. Cold Cranking amps is nothing but Cranking amps at -18°C. A good CA and CCA will ensure smooth cold start.

Now that we have learned about the terminologies there are some tips to choose right battery for your car-

- The very first thing is to determine your battery group i.e. the perfect dimensions of the battery for your car. Every car manual has information about its battery size, CCA, CA, and ampere hour ratings. So, do not forget to check your manual.

- Do not choose a battery that has ampere hour rating lower than your existing battery or mentioned in the manual. It will give you starting trouble and affects the battery life.

- If you are residing in cold areas, you should buy a battery with higher CCA.

- A good RC (Reserve Capacity) is helpful in case the alternator of your car fails.

- In a way to maintain your car regularly, buy battery with handles/loops.

- Dry Cell and Lead Acid batteries are common batteries. Dry cells are slightly costlier than Lead Acid but have a longer life.

- Always keep the warranty card safe, it will help you in case of a defected battery.
