How to opt the best inverter battery for your household usage

Power cut is a common problem in India and in summers when the temperature is getting hotter day by day, you must have an inverter as an alternative. When you are looking to buy a new inverter for your home you need to match the specification of the inverter and battery with your total required electric load. Many people who are not aware of the technical specification and details of inverter and its battery, they chose wrong product which is not able to withstand the required electric load of your home and thus resulting in early exhaustion.

Inverter is an electronic device which converts the DC output of the battery into AC output which is required to run the appliances. Now, the very first thing which we need to understand is how to calculate required battery capacity for the inverter. You have probably noticed that the battery names looks like Luminous 120Ah tubular battery, Power Bank series 50Ah etc. what does the term AH or Ah means? Well, it’s an acronym for Ampere Hour, meaning the amount of current the battery can supply for the specific duration. There is a formula given to calculate the battery size:

Battery Size = (Total loads in Watts) x (Backup in hours)/ Voltage

Total load in Watts implies to the number of loads you need for your household consumption. For example if you have 4 bulbs of 30 Watt each and 3 coolers of 100 Watt each then the effective power requirement will be 4*30 + 3*100 = 420 Watts. Backup hour is the number of hours you need for your backup. When the backup hour increases the required battery size also increases. Voltage is the nominal voltage of the battery cell. Normally in India, its value is 12V or sometimes 24V.

Generally, there are two types of batteries available in the market i.e. Flat plate battery and Tubular battery. They are different from each other on the basis of technology they use to store the current. Some important factors in which they differ are:

1- Flat plate batteries have low battery life, generally up to 3 years while Tubular batteries give up to 5 years of battery life.

2- Flat plate batteries have low efficiency and there is much wastage of current. Tubular batteries have high efficiency and low wastage of current.

3- Flat plate battery requires high maintenance while Tubular requires medium level of maintenance.

4- Generally, Tubular batteries are costlier than Flat plate batteries.

This is a small summary to give you an idea about how to choose right inverter and battery by keeping your electrical usage in mind. There are a number of good brands in market that provide Flat plate and Tubular batteries at very reasonable price.
